Dermatology Services
Don Mehrabi MD is a Board Certified Dermatologist specializing in all medical, cosmetic, surgical, and laser dermatology. Below are a few of the conditions that we treat. For more information on any of the topics below, or to access a library of dermatology topics, please visit our Patient Education page.
Acne
The four main causes of acne include hormones, stress, makeup, and physically touching or blocking the pores. Acne is generally classified as comedonal, inflammatory, or nodulocystic. It is possible to have a combination of any of these types. Treatments for acne include topical washes and creams, oral antibiotics, oral contraceptives and hormone blocking agents (if female), laser treatments, facials/spa treatments/extractions, and isotretinoin (Accutane). Any acne treatment must be personalized to the patient with awareness of past history, future goals, and medication tolerance. For more information on acne, visit ourĀ acne page.
Skin Cancer
There are numerous types of skin cancer, but the three most common skin cancers that most dermatologists see areĀ Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC), Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC), and Melanoma. The primary cause for all three major types of skin cancer is cumulative sun exposure. It is assumed that most people receive approximately 80% of their cumulative sun exposure before the age of 18. The best treatment is prevention through sun avoidance, regular sunscreen use (SPF 30 or greater applied regularly), and routine monthly self skin exams and annual visits to the dermatologist. The most common treatments for these skin cancers include surgical excision and closure, electrodessication and curretage (BCCs), and possible application of prescription creams (Imiquimod, 5-Fluorouracil). For cases of BCC and SCC involving the head and neck, as well as any melanoma, Mohs surgery may be used to get a higher rater of margin clearance. Clearance rates with Mohs surgery are routinely over 99% and are higher than most any other treatment method.
Cosmetic Procedures
We proudly feature both Botox and Dysport for the treatment of dynamic wrinkles, and Restylane/Perlane/Juvederm/Radiesse for dermal filling. In general, Botox and Dysport is used for the lines between the eyebrows (“11 lines”), forehead lines, and the lines around the eyes (“crows feet”). Dermal fillers are primarily used in the lower face to “fill in” the lines beneath the eyes, cheeks, nasolabial folds, along the jawline. As with most dermatology procedures, both of these cosmetic treatments can be used in other areas with advanced techniques.
Lasers are widely used for hair removal, acne treatment, red vessels/rosacea, dark spots/sunspots, and skin rejuvenation. Our offices proudly feature the following lasers
- Palomar Starlux 500 IPL for hair removal, photofacials (dark spots, red vessels), and non-ablative skin resurfacing (1540nm)
- Vbeam Perfecta for gold standard treatment of redness, vessels, photodamage, as well as dark spot treatment
- Matrix CO2 ablative laser resurfacing for the treatment of acne scarring, photodamage, and wrinkles
